Larry Schwartz, Steve Capper, Dave Reddix, Jeffrey Noel, and Mark Gravich are The Waldos, high school friends who used "4:20" as code for smoking marijuana at San Rafael High School in 1971. Their code for getting high has spread over the years and as a result April 20th (4/20) has become a pot smoker’s holiday, celebrated around the world.
There are plenty of myths about how the term four twenty came about. Fred Gardner describes the whole story as told by the original Waldos themselves. And wouldn’t you know, The Waldos have their own web site. The best part of the story? The Waldos are still friends to this day!
The best part of the story? The Waldos are still friends to this day! As someone who still gets high with childhood friends I can totally relate to this. If The Waldos were getting stoned in high school in 1971 that means we’re the same age. I graduated in 1972.
