Simple Syrup Recipe

Simple syrup is easy to make and handy to have around. Plain or flavored, there’s nothing like it.

When most people think of simple syrup they think of cocktails, bartenders, and nowadays, mixologists. Doesn’t have to be that way; simple syrup is great for making lemonade, ice tea, and other beverages including cocktails. It also comes in handy while cooking. For example, se simple syrup when making homemade ice cream.

simple syrup = water + sugar

The water:sugar ratio can range from 2:1 to 1:1, the former being lighter than the latter. Experiment and see which recipe you like best. Or make both and use whichever one suits your immediate needs.

Combine the water and sugar in a pan and bring it to a boil, stirring as you go. Simmer but don't boil. Cool and store in the refrigerator until needed.

This is a basic recipe and is ripe for experimentation. Try adding fresh or dry herbs, citrus peel, you name it.

I prefer organic free trade raw sugar myself but it has a darker color compared to white sugar. You can also try replacing some of the sugar with honey. That too will have a darker, more distinctive taste. Note that boiling honey reduces its healthy benefits.
